Gabby sues Prof Frimpong-Boateng for GHȼ10m over galamsey report

President Akufo-Addo’s nephew and a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has sued former Environment Minister, Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng for defamation.

Gabby, as he is widely known, is demanding GHȼ10m in damages.

A libel suit filed by Gabby against Prof. Frimpong-Boateng comes on the back of a controversial report by the latter on activities of the erstwhile Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining in which the former indicted Gabby of interfering in his works.

Apart from suing the professor for  “The sum of Ten Million Ghana Cedis (GHC10,000,000.00) as General Damages including Aggravated and/or Exemplary Damages for Defamation for libel”, Gabby also wants him to apologise to him and retract his words.

Gabby also asks for an order for a perpetual injunction to restrain Prof Frimpong-Boateng, “whether by himself, his servants, agents or assigns from repeating similar or other defamatory words” against him.

Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s leaked report which was sent to the Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare, details the fight against illegal mining in the country and how some top government officials were interfering in his work.

Persons cited by the report include renowned journalist Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, former Senior Minister and now Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo Maafo; Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and other officials of the Presidency.

Oppong Nkrumah, Kweku Baako and Otchere-Darko have denied wrongdoing and have challenged Frimpong-Boateng to provide evidence.

However, Gabby had to sue Prof. Frimpong-Boateng over the matter.
