Accra, Kumasi flooded after Monday rains

The heavy downpour on Monday has caused havoc in Kumasi with properties worth tens of thousands of cedis destroyed.

Reports say the raised that lasted barely an hour flooded parts of the Central business district where about 300 shops were affected.

Among the goods affected were wax prints, provisions, kitchen wares, children’s clothing, assorted drinks, and food items. Traders who painfully counted their losses also allege one of them lost over 1,500 live birds which were swept away by the flood.

Critics blame the development on the ongoing expansion works on the Kejetia Redevelopment project. The claim the blockade of some storm drains by the contractor forced Subin River to burst its banks flooding the market.

No casualty was recorded.

There were similar reports in Accra on Monday morning. According to reports shared on social media, parts of Spintex, Teshie, Shiashi were heavily affected disrupting traffic along the Legon-Tetteh Quarshie stretch as well as the Dzorwulu section of the N1 Highway.

Viral Videos showed several cars trapped while commuters remained stranded for several minutes. Other areas affected were the Dome Pillar 2 road, the Sahara Park in Adabraka, Ablekuma and parts of Teshie.
